The Opportunity to Play Soccer, is a program that enables youth with disabilities to experience “The Beautiful Game”
TOPSoccer, which is the acronym for “The Opportunity to Play Soccer”, is a program that enables youth with disabilities to experience “The Beautiful Game”. The Program is designed to bring learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl who has a mental or physical disability.
Who will be working with my child?
The TOPSoccer Program Director, Lisa Schritter-Miley, is a certified Special Education and P.E. teacher. She will recruit volunteers to work as “Buddies” to TOPSoccer participants. These “Buddies” are recruited from local schools and colleges.
What will be the format of the sessions?
Each Sunday afternoon session begins with soccer games and skills practice. After a short recess, we will break-out into small-sided games for the balance of the day. Participants will be placed on teams according to skills, not age. The game format will be either 3 versus 3 or 8 versus 8. Modifications to the games will be utilized as necessary.
What do you need from the TOPSoccer families?
A Family member is expected to be present at all games and practices. It is important to prepare your child for this activity by providing adequate water, nutritional needs, and emotional support. Providing up to date and information on your application and as the season progresses, updating the staff with any new information will help us to plan for your player’s needs. Report any concerns promptly to the Program Director. Our endeavor is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
When is the sessions?
The Fall sessions will take place on Sundays in September and October and the Spring sessions will take place on Sundays in March and April.
What are the fees?
The fee for the TOPSoccer Season is $25.00. This includes a game T-shirt and a Participation Medal. Families are responsible for getting black shorts, socks, and shin guards. Soccer USA, located at 1279 W. Danforth, 216-8989, will carry shorts and socks for $14.00. You may also purchase shin guards there. Coaches register for free.
